Tiling Getting Started

This tub surround is finally starting to roll. I wanted to use marble subway tiles but the estimate was around 4,000 dollars to do above the tub and on some wall area.

So I just got on the internet and ordered me a little Laticrete waterproofing membrane and made friends with a big brush and put it on. I probably used more than the average person but I  think I wrote the book on overkill.

It was a good arm workout I was almost able to do the whole area without stopping.

If you have not used the laticrete waterproofing membrane it is so easy and there was hardly any odor . I first used a roller with a thick nap but it kept slipping so I got a nice 4 inch brush and it went on a lot better. Always remember to brush vertical one day and brush horizontal the next day. This will allow even coats and keep it all level without ridges. It also washes off easily with water and you don't have to wait too long to tile.

This is such an easy job I never would pay someone to put this stuff on. Just remember to use the laticrete thinset that goes with the membrane.

Here are the walls in a nice shade of Olive Green. I piped a lot of silicone in the holes around faucet and shower head then put a nice thick coat of the membrane over the silicone. I was suppose to use a thinset mortar with a latex additive but I only needed about 1/3 of a cup. It was  too expensive to buy and ship also. I also plan on cutting the hole and putting silicone on the back of the tile cutout  and gluing it on . I will also silicone all around the tile after it is glued.

This is the thinset I am using . It is really smooth and great for porcelain.

I really  hope to be tiling next week.
This project has been in the making for a very long time. yes years.

I have lack of motivation . I really wanted to hire this done but the $4,000.00 estimate got me going. I can do this for around 200.00  because I already had the wall tile sitting in the garage.

I am planning on putting some marble subway tiles up after I get some cabinets in there . Hopefully my cabinet maker hasn't retired.
